As you begin to plan the move to your new place, you might be getting a little concerned about how you’re going to pack everything and have it safe and ready to go by your moving day. However, their list tells you to start “purging” your less-used items about two months before the move. While that’s a good idea, it’s a little too soon. The journal will come in very handy when you move to the next step.

While you’re planning your next steps, it’s time to begin getting quotes from at least three local moving companies when you’re still about eight weeks from moving. They’re competitive and want your business, so they’re willing to negotiate a better price if they know you need their services within the next few months. Decision Time

  • 6 Weeks to Go: Begin the school transfer process if applicable.
  • 5 Weeks to Go: As you start packing, list each room’s items clearly and label each box with its new location.
  • 4 Weeks to Go: Change of address, especially your doctor and dentist, so they can send your records to you as soon as you arrive at your new address. Also, if you haven’t done so already, request time off for the move.
  • 3 Weeks to Go: It’s time to contact the utilities such as electric, gas, water, and sewer to advise them of your moving date and to set up a new connection date regardless if you’re moving across town or the country.
  • 2 Weeks to Go: By now, everything should be in good order, but you still need to double check your progress and make sure you haven’t missed anything on this list. You will have a less stressful time knowing that everything is complete and ready to go!
  • 1 Week to Go: Have your utilities turned off one day after you move and then turned on one day before you arrive at your new home.
